Pedro Martínez on Saturday inaugurated a joint project with the office of Major League Baseball in the Dominican Republic to educate young prospects in the country.
"I want to give something back to the community and that something is one thing I always have time to give, that is education," Martinez told the AP.
Martinez said he wants to help the young players on the island who are struggling to reach the greatest baseball know their rights and duties.
"I requested the MLB office in the country to help us in this project because the truth is that we are little concerned about education for the players and it is felt," he said.
Dominican Republic is the largest producer of foreign players in the majors, but also has the highest number of positive drug tests in the lower circuits.
Martinez, who pitched last season with the Phillies, believes that more needs to be done to combat the use of banned substances.
The three-time Cy Young Award winner gave a talk to some 100 children in the Quisqueya stadium in the Dominican capital.
