Torii Hunter, Los Angeles Angels´outfielder said black players from Latin America are "imposters" when it comes to perceptions about the amount of black players in major league baseball.
Hunter made his comments two weeks ago during a panel discussion on USA Today baseball and were published in Wednesday editions.
"People see black faces on the ground and the perception is that they are African Americans," Hunter said. "They (American blacks) are not us (black Americans).
They are impostors. Even people I know come up to me and say, 'Hey,? What color is Vladimir Guerrero? It's a black player? I say, 'Come on, he is Dominican.
He's not black '. ". "As African-American players, we have a theory that baseball can find imitators and make them go through us. It's like having to look dark faces, so they went to Dominican Republic or Venezuela, because there they get cheaper.
It's like "why should sign this kid from the south side of Chicago and Scott Boras representing him and having to pay 5 million (dollars), when a Dominican I get a bag of chips? ... I insist, is something sad. "
Guillen's White Sox, Ozzie Guillén, scoffed at Hunter's comments before Wednesday's game against the Oakland Athletics.
Angels spokesman Eric Kay, said that Hunter will not talk more about the subject.
"It made me laugh because when I said, 'they hire them for a bag of chips', I thought,' Well, we have (Aroldis) Chapman (Cincinnati Reds). He was given 12 million (dollars).
We have (Dayan) Viciedo (White Sox). They gave him 10 million, "Guillen said in reference to two Cuban players recently profiled by major league clubs.
Chapman hired the Cincinnati pitcher for six years and 30.25 million dollars.
"I remember when I was a scout went (to Venezuela) and featured 30 players. Now, go get a 30 scouts and player.
