Capello Won't Resign England

Italian Fabio Capello came under heavy pressure after the 0-0 draw with Algeria left England's hopes of reaching the second round in doubt, but they put in a much-improved perfomance against Slovenia to book a clash with Germany.

The embarrassing defeat on Sunday, though, will prompt further calls for the Italian to leave yet, while he has confirmed he will seek a meeting with the Football Association, it appears he has no intention of walking away.

"I want to speak with the chairman and then decide my future. I need to know whether the FA have confidence in me or not," he said. Asked if he would resign, he replied: "Absolutely not."

He added: "When you lose, the manager gets criticised. We didn't play too badly in the first game against USA, just made a big mistake. We played a bad game against Algeria but we played well against Slovenia. Today, if the referee had whistled for the goal, it would have been different. It was too big a mistake."

Captain Steven Gerrard said: "I'm sure Fabio will stay and he'll address his own situation very soon. I don't know when. Personally I'd like him to stay as I think he's a fantastic manager but that's my opinion."

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp badded: "This guy is good, he has a great record and I think we have to look at the whole thing. I have confidence in him. It's not time to chop and change."
