Against the righty A.J. Burnett on Tuesday, Ortiz hit a liner into the hands of second baseman Robinson Cano, making a possible hit on a routine out in defeating New York 6-4 Boston.

He hit rolled back to Cano in the third inning and then struck a Burnett curve to close the fifth. In the eighth, against lefty reliever Damaso Marte, harmless high Ortiz hit to center.

When manager Terry Francona was asked Tuesday night if he thought Mike Lowell put in place to Mars after Ortiz's single entry opening Kevin Youkilis, who settled on the basis of the potential tying run.

"No," said Francona. "Just is the second game of the season. I do not think we want to start doing that. And it is not Mikey can not hit. But the big stage can not be forgotten."
