Roger Federer was surprisingly eliminated Miami Masters on Tuesday when he lost to Tomas Berdych 6-4, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (6) in the fourth round.
With the victory, Czech Berdych left behind eight straight defeats at the hands of the Swiss world number one racket and was the first tournament favorite. Berdych, seeded 16th, also had 11-game losing streak against teams located in the top 10 website ranking.
"I fought my best," said Federer. "My game has problems at the moment. ... I do not know why. "
Among the players also managed to advance to the quarterfinals are American Andy Roddick and Spanish Rafael Nadal, who could face in the semifinals.
Roddick beat Benjamin Becker of Germany 7-6 (4), 6-3. Defeated Nadal 7-6 (5), 6-4 to his compatriot David Ferrer.
The three-time champion Venus Williams reached the women's semifinals with a win 6-3, 6-1 Agnieszka Radwanska, 6th. favorite.
Federer had several spectacular recoveries to rescue the second, but made only two of his 10 break opportunities in the match and committed 62 unforced errors, many with backhands that are not usually reliable.
