The Cuban pitcher Mike Cuellar, a lefty who led the Baltimore Orioles to win the decisive game of the 1970 World Series, died Friday at a hospital in Orlando, Florida, told The Baltimore Sun newspaper.
Cuellar was 72 years old and suffered from stomach cancer, according to the newspaper.
The Cuban managed 185 major league victories in four seasons and finished with 20 wins or more. In 1969, he shared the Cy Young of the American League with Denny McLain, from Detroit Tigers-
Cuellar came to Baltimore in a deal with Houston in 1968 when he was 32.
In his first year in the Orioles, he finished with record of 23-11, pitched five shutouts and became the first shortstop to keep the team in the Cy Young.
In its first three years in Baltimore, the team won 318 games and reached the World Series three times.
The historical record of the Cuban with the Orioles is 143 victories and 88 defeats.
