More than 6,200 thousand athletes participating in the National Games XII Salesian Don Bosco 2010 were intoxicated and about 22 inmates are in different medical centers in the Capital.
The organizers of the event had not been established until noon the source of the problem, although presumably it could have been through the food they ate at noon yesterday.
Almost all the 100 thousand athletes who have been treated in clinics and hospitals have been released, reported this morning the father Victor Pichardo, supervisor of the Salesians of the West Indies, and Tomas Polanco, director general of the Games Don Bosco.
"We do not have an official medical report, but we have hinted that it is a massive food poisoning," explained Pichardo and Polanco.
Polanco said that if it was for food, came to lunch yesterday, because the charge of supplying the food was brought to the Olympic Center, where they concentrate the Games, with several hours of delay.
"It seems that food could not be transported in time and when they did had some seven hours of having cooked and packed in disposable dishes," said Thomas.
It was reported that food was hired by the Games Organizing Committee, through a private firm allegedly headed by Andy Chong.
He said the positive part of the problem is that almost one hundred percent of the athletes had received only primary care and are only 22 inmates in the General Hospital of the Armed Forces, located in front of the stage of competition in the Olympic Center Juan Pablo Duarte. It was reported that those affected have also been treated at the Medical Center Universidad Central del Este (UCE) and Moscoso Puello Hospital.
"We are waiting for this afternoon the official medical report to give a finished version of the problem. So far there are no serious internal and that is very important, "stressed Pichardo and Polanco.
They explained that athletes began to feel dizzy, with vomiting and diarrhea, starting at 2:30 am on Saturday.
"It is believed that food was noon, because many do not dined by the hour so late that lunch", they said.
