Free agent outfielder Johnny Damon has agreed to a one-year, $8 million contract with the Detroit Tigers, SI.com has confirmed.

The deal, which includes a no-trade clause and no deferred money, is pending a physical. Damon, 36, has no history of injuries.

"I'm happy," Damon said. "I think everything went smooth. We had options, but Detroit was my first one for some time."

The Atlanta Braves, Chicago White Sox and Tampa Bay Rays had also been pursuing Damon in recent weeks, and the Red Sox had internal discussions about bringing back Damon, who left Boston after the 2005 season.

Damon hit .286 with 24 homers for the New York Yankees last season. He likely would bat leadoff for the Tigers, filling the void left when Detroit dealt Curtis Granderson to the Yankees.

He also gives Detroit the left-handed bat it needs and a veteran in the outfield, where his savvy is an asset and his arm a liability.

He is expected to play in left field and could also see some time at DH.
