Taiwan Baseball Awake After Scandals

Taiwan authorities announced they will cut taxes to revive baseball in the island after the sport was severely beaten by a series of match-fixing scandals.

The proposal for a lower tax burden, which is part of a four-year program that aims to revive the sport, was approved by Prime Minister Den-Yih Wu, said the Government Information Office in a press release.

In addition, the president called on government authorities to work together to "ensure that measures to prevent party fixes, implemented thoroughly in order to stimulate the enthusiasm of the fans of baseball," an official told AFP National Council Physical Education and Sports, Dai Wan-ling.

The move came after prosecutors accused 24 people, including three players, of having links with intrigues and fraud in the latest scandal of sport on the island more often.

Prosecutors began investigating last year match-fixing claims after some players received cash, luxury cars and even the services of prostitutes from bookmakers in exchange for losing a game deliberately.

In 2008, Taiwan's baseball league suspended the team from Media-T Rex by Swift games that were involved the team's coach and three players, among others.
