Brett Gardner hopes to prove it can be a gardener starts with the Yankees.
The 26-year-old spoke with the media at the team's minor league complex in Tampa, Florida, and said that this winter has focused on improving their taps.
"That's the beauty of hitting against a pitching machine," said Gardner. "You can give between 50 to 100 balls in 15 to 20 minutes. There is no time limit. I've been doing taps, and seizing more of it to bring it back to my game. "
After spending the winter practicing in a complex near her home in South Carolina, Gardner was one of the first players to arrive early to the camp of the Yankees.
Gardner is ready to compete with Marcus Thames and Randy Winn for a place in the fields and to show that deserves to be on the roster for opening day.
The Yankees acquired from Detroit Curtis Granderson with the original intent of playing in the plant, but those plans may be flexible, especially after Melky Cabrera traded to Atlanta for right-hander Javier Vazquez.
