COD expect 105 medals

Two days before the start of the Central American and Caribbean Games, the Dominican Olympic Commission broke its silence on its forecast of medals at the Central American and Caribbean Games.

The athletic event begins tomorrow at Mayaguez and will be 17 July to early August. In a statement from the press department of the COD, the president of that entity, Luisín Mejía, reported that it predicted a total of 105 medals.

"The Dominican Republic will achieve the goal of 105 medals and fight for fifth place in the overall medals table," said Mejia in the office.

The figure far exceeds that projected for the Games of Cartagena de Indias, when Mejia left knowing they were 80 and the country finally achieved 97 medals in the event.

In giving prognostic information on Mayagüez, said the measurement was made according to a study of the technical direction of the Dominican Olympic Committee.

"This goal is reasonable and prudent," said Mejía, who was accompanied by ad vitam DOC President Jose Joaquin Puello Herrera, general secretary, Antonio Acosta, and technical director of the institution, Nelly Manuel Doñé.

The Dominican Republic is ranked fourth in the 2002 Games in San Salvador in the picture, with Puerto Rico in the fifth. The picture changed in the appointment of Cartagena de Indias, when Puerto Ricans Dominicans moved to the fourth and fell to fifth.

"We're going to Mayaguez overcome with the provision of Cartagena de Indias," said Mejia. The first group of athletes left yesterday for Puerto Rico.
