Sami Khedira scored in the 82nd minute and Germany beat Uruguay 3-2 Saturday to reach third place in the World Cup. Uruguay fought back and ended up having the lead with goals from Edinson Cavani and Diego Forlan, but the powder was not enough against a Germany team who won with goals from Thomas Mueller, Marcell Jansen and Khedira.
The Celeste matched which won fourth place in the Mexico World Cup 1970, its best finish since he was champion in 1930 and 1950. Germany repeated the third-place finish four years ago when they hosted the tournament.
"Obviously being among the four is something spectacular,''said Forlan. "If at first, we had asked, because we would have liked. It's a good thing.''
For Uruguayan coach Oscar W. Tabarez, the defeat does not detract from a tournament that renewed the prestige of a team that recently had lost its significance.
And Tabarez warned that Uruguay is in a position to make noise again in four years in Brazil: "I do not think too vain, if we improve a little, we can aspire to significant players in international tournaments.''
Mueller and Forlan reached five goals each to tie with Spanish David Villa and Dutchman Wesley Sneijder as scorers of the championship. Uruguayan striker's free kick hit the crossbar in injury time.
