Amare Stoudemire agreed Monday to join the New York Knicks and the team hopes not to do so alone.
The Knicks announced Monday that Stoudemire managed to offer a contract later this week, the conclusion of the moratorium on recruitment of free agents.
The representative of Stoudemire, Happy Walters, said the contract is the highest allowed by league rules. The Knicks can pay Stoudemire nearly 100 million dollars over the next five years.
Wearing a blue Knicks cap, Stoudemire said he hopes to help rebuild the team and bring the Knicks back into the limelight, perhaps in the company of a player the likes of LeBron James or Dwyane Wade with him .
"I feel great to be able to be a pioneer and to show my leadership," Stoudemire said at Madison Square Garden, where there were signs at all entrances to the arena showing the player with a Knicks uniform.
